Spector apologizes for Wolfenstein comments

Added: 08.05.2013 17:37 | 20 views | 0 comments

Deus Ex, Epic Mickey designer says sorry to team at MachineGames, but still believes there is "too little variety" in games today.

Deus Ex and Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector has apologized for , the industry veteran apologized directly to the team at MachineGames.

"I'm sorry. I owe the Wolfenstein team an apology," Spector said. "I wasn't trying to diss you or your game. I have total respect for anyone making a game. I know how hard it is#133; And to everyone who pointed out that I didn't know enough about the game to judge, well, you were right. Consider this my mea culpa."

Spector went on to explain that he was not motivated to lash out at the Wolfenstein announcement over his most recent games coming up short. In fact, he argued the opposite is true.

"No sour grapes here. None. I'm disappointed that people assume they know my motivations for saying what I said," Spector said. "I'm not bitter about the 'failure' of the Disney Epic Mickey games--I don't consider them failures. They're the two best-selling games I've worked on!"

Though Spector said he is sorry for describing Wolfenstein: The New Order as a "generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game," he maintains that there is not enough variety in games today.

"Though I was wrong to take out general frustrations on an individual game and on a single team, I'll stand by my overall statement about lack of variety and innovation in mainstream gaming," Spector said. "I was simply expressing, once again, my long-held belief that we make too many shooters, lots of which look, sound and feel like basically the same game dressed up in different clothes. I've been saying that for years--it's nothing new. Wolfenstein got in the line of fire, but I've been shooting at this target for a long time."

Spector's full apology note is available on his .

Wolfenstein: The New Order launches later this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-generation consoles. It . Check out GameSpot's preview of the game below and come back tomorrow and Friday for continuing coverage.

No multiplayer in new Wolfenstein

Added: 08.05.2013 14:49 | 15 views | 0 comments

MachineGames' upcoming shooter will be single-player-only experience.

The upcoming from Bethesda and MachineGames will not include a multiplayer component, the studios have confirmed with GameSpot.

Instead, the current- and next-generation game will strictly be a single-player title, a responsibility MachineGames does not take lightly.

"It's such a huge part of video game legacy," creative director Jens Matthies told GameSpot in a new video preview. "If there's a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It's the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming."

"On a personal level, I played this when I was younger and it was mind-blowing," Matthies added. "I never then of course dreamed that I was going to be working with it. It's both an honor and a legacy."

Not all in the industry as are excited as Matthies is about the new Wolfenstein. Writing on , Deus Ex and Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector slammed the new game.

"Did the world really need another Wolfenstein game? Did we need a generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game? Uh. No. The world did not. I am so tired of stuff like this," he said. "Oh, and could we all just agree we'll never use the generic gravelly-whisper trailer voice guy ever again? And one more thing: Please stop using Jimi Hendrix to promote your adolescent male power fantasies."

Spector has since for his comments.

For more on Wolfenstein: The New Order, check out the full video preview below. In addition, GameSpot will have more coverage of the game tomorrow and Friday.
